Lori and Karl Lutz-Dinkel

The founders

Throughout her life, Lori Lutz-Dinkel, the erudite, widely-travelled and dedicated wife to Karl Lutz, considered herself an enabler. She was concerned at all times to initiate meaningful and promising projects. Her guiding principle in life was to support other people in hard-won ventures, especially in her commitment as charter member of the Fondation des Fondateurs and as a founder of Lori & Karl Lutz-Fonds.

Making a difference

An article in the «Schweizer Monatsheften» (today "Schweizer Monat") in 2006 caught the eye of Lori Lutz: it reported that most charitable foundations are too small to effectively implement the purpose of their foundations. There would be more money left over for donations if several founders were to share administration, bookkeeping and other tasks.

Lori Lutz and her husband had considered eventually bequeathing their estate to charitable interests for many years. But they had been unable to find an institution that satisfied their wishes. The question of whether the estate was big enough to justify the establishment of an independent foundation was an additional concern.

The newspaper article touched something deep inside Lori Lutz, and she immediately contacted the author. The idea to establish an exemplary umbrella foundation gradually took shape over the course of innumerable discussions. Fondation des Fondateurs was finally set up in Buchberg SH at the end of March 2007.

Education and lifestyle

It is necessary to consider Lori Lutz's personal history to understand her motivation to engage in philanthropy: a tradesman's daughter, she grew up in humble circumstances. At school, as she was prone to say, she lived only for the next German lesson. Nevertheless, financial constraints meant she was unable to pursue her passion for literature and embark on a degree programme in German studies that she coveted. Instead, she completed a Swiss Federal diploma in business management, and started her professional life as a secretary. She joined the Sandoz Company after the Second World War, where she advanced to become Director of Records and the first woman in the Group to be awarded professional power of attorney.

Member of the foundation board 2007–2011

Not only did Ms Lori Lutz and her husband establish the Fondation des Fondateurs, she also set up the young umbrella foundation's first restricted fund, the Lori und Karl Lutz-Fonds, a foundation that seeks primarily to promote the interests of disadvantaged women. A charter member of the foundation board, she was particularly committed to advancing the interests of FdF after the death of her husband. She passed away in 2011, aged 88, still dedicated to her work.
